How To Prep Your Lawn For Spring

To prepare your lawn for Spring, there are a few important steps to take. First and foremost, clean up your lawn by removing debris and matted areas that may contain snow mold. By cleaning up, you allow better air flow to your grass and prevent insect infestation. Early spring is the perfect time to apply pre-emergent – a weed killer that is to be applied before fertilizers and before your soil temperature reaches 55-60 degrees Fahrenheit. If you wait too long, weed seeds will begin to grow and the pre-emergent will likely be ineffective.

Most people know how important fertilization is in the spring. Fertilization helps wake your yard from its winter snooze and provides the nutrients it needs to withstand all the stress, heat, and drought that summer brings.

Another spring treatment is core aeration, which allows air and water to reach the roots of your grass more quickly and increases root development and new growth. Core aeration should also be done in early Spring before soil temperature reaches 55-60 degrees Fahrenheit. Once unprepared soil has time to warm up, any weak areas in your lawn will be more susceptible to vigorous weed seeds.

Winter can cause some stress on your lawn. Come spring, you may find some areas that were damaged by salt or snow shovels/plows. Spring is the opportune time to re-seed any damaged areas. However, do not combine pre-emergent with your re-seeding. Pre-emergent will prevent ANY type of seeds from growing. Spring is the perfect time to start the foundation towards a green lawn.
